Matúš Jakabčic CZ-SK Big Band appeared for the first time on Přerov Festival  in 2004. In 2005, this band performed on festivals such as Jazzfest Brno, Jazz Goes To Town (Hradec Králové), Jazz For Sale (Košice), Pet Jazz (Bratislava). All these festivals had been absolved under the name Czechoslovakian Big Band of Matúš Jakabčic. In 2006, the band took part on Prešov festival and workshop. Together with Harry Sokal, world-known saxophonist, the band took part at the stage in Arena Theatre and ORF Radiokulturhaus in Vienna. Austrian television transmitted the performance in many European countries (EBU program).  In 2007, the band performed in Šahy and Levice and also played the concert of Slovakian and Hungarian project called Art of Cultural Communication which was prepared by USA Embassy in Slovakia. In 2007, there was a CD produced by Austrian Radio, called Matúš Jakabčic CZ-SK Big Band featuring Harry Sokal. There was also concert and presentation of this album in January 2008. In 2008, the band also absolved festivals in Martin (Jazzalive), Prague (Bohemia Jazz Fest), Domažlice, České Budějovice, Hodonín and Uherské Hradište (CZ-SK Jazz Weekend), Trenčín (Jazz Under the Castle), Žilina (solo performance in Culture house Fatra) and Přerov (25th Czechoslovakian Jazz Festival). In October 2008, the band was invited to concert prepared by president of Czech republic, Václav Klaus. In January 2009 together with soloists Sigi Finkel and Berco Balogh there was another performance in Slovak Philharmony (Reduta) organized by Volksbank. Matúš Jakabčic CZ-SK Big Band consists of top Slovakian and Czech jazzmen, who grew professionally by playing in many jazz orchestras. The play list is made of original music of Matúš Jakabčic and also author arrangements of well-known jazz classics.

Matúš Jakabčic

Playing in Big Bands and making music for them has always been very important for Matúš Jakabčic. He started his professional career in Slovak Television Dance Orchestra where he had stayed for five years as a composer, arranger and guitar player. Then came the cooperation with Czechoslovakian Radio Dance Orchestra in Bratislava. In 1993, he composed, arranged and conducted music for Big Band of Bratislava Conservatory (Dying for Beauty musical – based on Manon Lescaut by Abbé Prévost). He had also been a leader of this band for few years. He employed his way of composing at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he was given many prizes for composing (e.g. Charlie Mingus Prize). Herb Pomeroy, Greg Hopkins, Ken Pullig and Jon Damian were his important teachers at Berklee. During his studies, he was also given a possibility to make arrangements for Greg Hopkins Big Band. Jakabčic absolved the school, Department of jazz composition in 1995.  In years 1996/2005 he had been a member of Gustav Brom Orchestra and he also made arrangements for last two profile albums (11 jazz classics). Together with his tentet he absolved Bratislava Jazz Days 1995, Bratislava Music Festival 1996 (the guest Greg Hopkins) and festival in Přerov. The CD Matúš Jakabčic Tentet feat. Greg Hopkins was produced in 1998. In 1999, he led an international big band which consisted of European musicians. This was because of the European Days festival and the concert was recorded and transmitted in Slovak Television and Slovak Radio. In 2000, Jakabčic was asked to compose a piece for European Jazz Days Orchestra by its leader. The song was published on CD called Swinging Europe vol. 3. Jakabčic has been member of Paris Euro Jazz Big Band as musician and author since it was established in 1997 (CD Euro Jazz Big Band 1998, Beyond Borders 2002). Together with Juraj Bartoš he arranged a musical called Sugar. In May 2005, together with Budapest Jazz Orchestra he played a concert which consisted of his music and author arrangements only. In April 2006, he produced and arranged Robo Opatovsky CD called Swing and Latin. This was made for 13-member orchestra and Jakabčic was an author and also interpreter. In 2008, he arranged program for an Austrian vocal big band called Swing Sisters

Harry Sokal (Rakúsko)

Harry Sokal belongs to the best post-Coltrane saxophone players of Europe. He co-performed with many European and American jazz musicians. He has been a member of Vienna Art Orchestra since 1997 and also was a member of Art Farmer Quintette since 1978 to 1999. The list of players he has co-performed with is really huge : Art Blakey, Dave Holland, Terje Rypdal, Daniel Humair, Michel Portal, Mike Richmond, Minu Cinelu, Friedrich Gulda, Idris Muhammad, Joe Zawinul, Harry Pepl, Jene Jackson, Andy McKee. He is the initiator and leader of projects with many Austrian and international musicians. The way of Sokal’s playing is based on virtuosity with lyrical tone, stylistic clearness and saving the character of every record.
